Use a metal 12 inch drywall knife after the water has soaked for a few minutes, you can also get a special tool used for removal of popcorn ceilings on Tulsa Drywall, it is a flat metal blade on a pole that will help with reaching the ceiling. If the ceiling is painted then you can try to scrape it because the water will not help by soaking in but it is recommended to still use some to help keep the dust down, after that it will just take more scraping but be careful because you may gouge or damage the Tulsa Drywall. If you can not scrape down the painted popcorn ceiling then you can skim coat it with a drywall mud. Even when you use water you still can damage the ceiling and you will have to repair the Tulsa Drywall after the popcorn ceiling is removed. If you do not wish to deal with scraping the popcorn ceiling you can always just skim coat it with drywall mud but it is still recommended that you remove furniture and light fixtures to give you room to work. Just remember that this job is a very messy one and recommend having a tyvek suit to keep this off of you as it can dry out your skin as well. When cleaning up the dust you can use a vacuum with a soft bristle brush to help pick up the dust, a soft bristle broom also will work to help with cleaning. A damp sponge is recommended on dried spots to help with removal because you need to let the water soak in before you try to remove it as you can get it stuck in the carpet. If you run into any smoke stains you will need to use a stain blocking primer to keep it from showing through the new drywall and paint. The popcorn texture scraper is designed differently from a standard drywall knife with the way that the blade sits on the Tulsa Drywall to help not gouge the ceiling; it can also connect to a long pole extension to help with reaching taller ceilings. You can also use a 6 inch wide or a 10 inch wide drywall taping knife you just need to be careful to not gouge the Tulsa Drywall. If you have a popcorn texture removal knife you can normally attach a standard plastic bag to it to help catch the mud as you scrape it off of the ceiling revealing you beautiful Tulsa Drywall. You can also get a backpack sprayer to help with applying the warm water to the popcorn texture or if you have a spray bottle that will work as well just will be a good workout.
